Hello, I have some long filter sets that would be better displayed on the side rather than at the top. For example, the way filtering is done here at data.gov.
How would I go about doing this?
I don't think I can simply adapt a template, because templates affect content within Search Form, List, Item, etc. not how they work together.

You can try combining list with hidden form and a form module.
But still I think the best way would be to create new template :) You would need to copy existing template to a new folder and change settings in the templateDetails.xml file, otherwise changes would get overwritten on update.
